How to Turn Landfill Tragedy into Hope and Healing — Justice for Kiteezi Landfill Victims in Uganda (Coming Soon)

By Agora Centre For Research
Rebuild Lives After the Kiteezi Tragedy: Stand with Families to Demand Justice, Secure Safe Resettlement, and Transform Waste Into a Catalyst for Healing and Hope.

About This Project

🧭 Introduction to the Metaproblem

Environmental injustice and climate vulnerability are on the rise across the Global South. Rapid urbanization, poor infrastructure, and government neglect are creating deeply unjust conditions—where the most vulnerable are paying the price for systemic failures. Landfills in particular are becoming death zones for low-income communities, exposing them to toxic waste, displacement, and even death.

🌍 Core Problem in the Bioregion

In Kiteezi, the main landfill serving the entire Kampala Metropolitan Area, tragedy struck when the landfill collapsed, taking with it the lives of at least 34 people, destroying homes, and flooding surrounding residences with toxic leachate.

The landfill had reached capacity as early as 2010, yet continued to be used for years. Despite promises from the Office of the Prime Minister to compensate and resettle survivors, most families have received no support.

Now, authorities are demanding full evacuation of the area without offering residents the means to relocate—forcing families to choose between their homes and their safety.

💡 Proposed Solution

Our project is designed to bring justice, visibility, and support to the survivors of the Kiteezi landfill collapse by:

  • Raising emergency funds for affected families to relocate safely
  • Documenting testimonies and stories from the ground to amplify their voices
  • Applying legal and advocacy pressure on the government to honor its compensation promises
  • Launching local partnerships to create long-term solutions for safer waste infrastructure

🌱 What Makes it Unique

Unlike traditional aid responses, this project is community-led and justice-centered. It combines human storytelling with legal advocacy and direct support. We are not just treating the symptoms—we are exposing the root causes and demanding accountability.

This is not just disaster relief. It's a movement to end environmental injustice and rewrite the future for neglected urban communities.

❤️ Why People Should Donate

This is urgent. Families are living among toxic waste, grieving their loved ones, and receiving no support.
Your donation is not just money—it's a stand for human dignity, climate justice, and government accountability.

We cannot allow this tragedy to be buried like the people who were lost.
