Across the globe, communities are facing the rising threat of plastic pollution and unsustainable consumption. In Costa Rica alone, less than 10% of all plastic waste is actually recycled — the rest ends up in landfills, rivers, or the ocean. This issue is especially visible in rural areas, where waste collection infrastructure is limited or nonexistent. The result: growing environmental degradation, pollution, and a disconnection from the true impact of our waste.
In the Tinamastes and Diamante Valley region of Costa Rica, a growing number of expats are moving into the area — often unintentionally adding pressure to already fragile local systems. While many come with good intentions, the lack of adequate waste collection, recycling services, and regenerative infrastructure has created a gap between consumption and responsibility. Without conscious systems in place, there's a risk of extractive living rather than reciprocal contribution to the land and local community.
Our project is creating a Resource Recycling Center that serves as a dual-purpose hub: a collection point for recyclable and repurposable materials and an educational center for sustainability practices.
We’ve already built a machine that transforms plastic waste into durable construction blocks, and we’re currently acquiring an extruder to expand our capacity — turning waste into functional products like tiles, beams, and furniture. By integrating hands-on education, local training, and regenerative design, we empower individuals to take ownership of their waste footprint while contributing to community resilience.
This isn’t just about recycling — it’s about regeneration. The impact of this project can be measured through the reduction of plastic waste in the environment, the improvement of ecosystem cleanliness, the level of community engagement and education on sustainable practices, and the creation of new economic opportunities by transforming waste into valuable, marketable products.
We are creating a closed-loop system that:
By learning with and from the local community, we model reciprocity, inclusion, and collective stewardship.
